Dungeon Defenders is a new Xbox Live Arcade game by Trendy entertainment and Reverb publishing. The game is a third person hack ‘n slash with tower defense elements and there is an RPG style level up and character customization mechanic. What makes Dungeon Defenders so fun, and it really is fun, is the game’s multiplayer aspect. No, I’m not talking about online co-op, or XBL co-op, I mean real split screen shoulder-to-shoulder gameplay. Although the game does have online multiplayer, I decided to embark on retro style co-op gameplay, so it started with a phone call to one of my friends.
GoozerNation has a Dungeon Defenders code that you can win. See the details below.
I asked him to come over and told him that I had a multiplayer game he might like to play. A few hours later he showed up ready for a gaming marathon. We played Dungeon Defenders for about 10 hours, and we still hadn’t beaten it, but we had a blast playing, and realized we hadn’t played a game like this in a very long time.
Dungeon Defenders is a hard game to explain because it’s part third person RPG and part tower defense game. The game plays something like this. First, you create your character. There are four character types: the Apprentice, a mage type, the steward, a tank type, the huntress, an archer type, and the monk, a healer type although he has no healing abilities. After character creation is done you’ll start your first mission, protect the crystal, and that will be the same for every level. Each character type has their own set of “Towers,” defensive blockades, traps, or spells. You can place your towers around the map in order to protect your crystal from the coming waves of enemies. Good placement is key because to place a tower you’ll have to spend mana, which you get by killing enemies and from treasure chests. You’ll also use up your total defense points quickly if you just place towers willy nilly on the map.
Dungeon Defenders is a team sport. The game’s far better playing with someone than it is playing single player. Calling out to your friend for a hand defeating an ogre, or having someone stay back and keep the machines running while you engage the enemies head on brings true cooperation to the game, and makes it more fun. After playing through the majority of the game you’ll want more, and the challenges deliver a ton of replay value to the game. Winning challenges will award your characters new items and needed experience, so make sure to play them even during your story mode playthrough. The tavern is the game’s lobby, of sorts. There you’ll find a store keeper selling items, pets, and services for your character. Pets are cool, but why you would need one is unclear since your character, and towers should be enough to defeat any foe, but the extremely high price made buying a pet a none issue in my playthrough.
If you have any interest in this game at all buy it. This is the most addicting game I’ve played in awhile, and I’ve played some really good games. I sure hope they release some sort of add on, or make a sequel sometime soon.
